The fourth release in the Octomore series and the most heavily-peated yet
The freshness and heather are still there, with more of a trace of bitter chocolate in this one, which just sits behind and plays in and out of that awesome peat smokiness. As Jim says:
"Like getting hit by a 20ft wave that has crashed over the peat bogs of Islay!"
TASTING NOTES
Character
What a sensation! Please try it first without water to experience the full power of this amazing spirit.
Colour
Winter sunshine.
Nose
The senses are totally ambushed. A vortex of peat smoke and fire, iodine, wet seaweed, tarry pitch and soaking sailcloth. The more subtle notes of hawthorn and heather, bog myrtle and mint, pine resin and mountain thyme emerge slowly bringing a coolness to the palate.
Palate
A stunning combination of aromatics and flavours. The senses pick up the mellow oakiness from the sweet bourbon casks coming through like chicory and bitter chocolate which brings balance and subtle smoothness. Also, deep down the Bruichladdich DNA of soft green fruits.
Finish
The palate and olfactory system have been completely seduced, having survived the war of the elements, and the flavours remain long after the storm has passed.
Mood
Defiance. Definitely not for the faint-hearted. Like getting hit by a 20ft wave that has crashed over the peat bogs of Islay!

another benchmark – this time 167 ppm. but don’t think this dram is all about cojones (ok, well that too) – as jim murray says in his whisky bible: “forget about the age. don’t be frightened by the phenol levels. great whisky is not about numbers; it’s about excellent distillation and careful maturation.”
or as allthingswhisky.com put it: “like watching a beautiful woman undress, this whisky just gets better and better the more it reveals itself... this slow sensual build becomes almost overwhelming by the time you take your first sip.”

The fifth core release in the cult Octomore series and another limited opportunity to discover what happens when Olympic levels of peat are caressed by the sublime elegance of the Bruichladdich stills.
This is another classic Octomore, and again the peating level rises, now to 169 PPM. Combining the power of the world’s most heavily-peated barley with the purity and elegance of spirit produced by the classic long-necked Bruichladdich stills, this is a whisky for the connoisseur and the enlightened student of peat.
Voted single malt of the year 2010 by Jim Murray, and only ever released at five years of age, the question has always been asked: “How will this incredible spirit develop with age?”. Now for the first time a lucky few will know.
Only 6,000 bottles of this first Octomore 10-year-old will be released, taking this new cult Islay to another level. As a prelude to an ongoing 10-year-old Octomore, this expression is peated to 80.5ppm and bottled at 50% alc/ vol.

Crown Speciality Packaging UK: Octomore Comus
In a fierce market, this Octomore Comus pack caught the judges’ eye for its “great synergy between bottle, tin and graphics”. Another judge simply said “lovely”. Developed as a premium collectable pack, it provides a tactile feel, with the tin embossed and coated in multiple layers of gloss varnish. Judges were surprised by “this very striking” pack, which colour had changed from traditional black to white. As a limited edition release, Octomore Comus stock was pre-allocated to individual markets where it immediately sold out providing an additional £740k of revenue adding 10% to the overall sales revenues for 2011. One judge said that the product was “superbly executed” and another said it had “dramatic” shelf presence and was “an innovation that extends the brand”. The judges concurred to agree that the tin was the perfect solution to protect the premium distinctive acid etched bottle which in turn was designed specifically for the desired closure of traditional biodegradable cork.

The Starpack Industry Awards scheme is now in its 53rd year and is the UK's premier annual awards scheme recognising innovation in packaging design and technology.
Octomore Comus, a marriage of the peatiest whisky in the world with the subtle sweetness of French oak from Chateau d'Yquem, was released earlier this year and is a limited edition bottling.
