Tasting Notes

Light golden honey in colour with honey smoked oak chips, sea spray and vanilla on the nose. The palate is rewarded with big flavours of candied fruit and vanilla custard overlaid with the familiar Bowmore smokiness.

Bruichladdich 2008 Munich Whisky Festival, 1986 21 Year Old

Description

A special bottling for the 2008 Munich Whisky Festival. A 21 year old, 1986 vintage sherry single cask number 531. One of only 554 individually numbered bottles.

Independent and privately owned; oceans of enthusiasm, tuns and tuns of attitude. Peating ranges from a few crumbs to a whole moor, and that’s just per bottle. Subject to closures, most recent reopening in 2001. Huge range, means that there is something for everyone.

 

Tasting Notes

The nose is fresh pear, apple and gooseberry, replaced by raisins, dates, honey and nuts, and sweet sherry. On the palate there is palate warm spices and ripe Spanish oak merging with traces of blackberries, licorice and toffee.

Description

One of only 350 individually numbered bottles from single cask number 525. Bourbon.

Released during the 2007 Feis Ile (Islay Festival) The Ghost Ship refers to bureaucratic bungling resulting in a new pier not being suitable to cope with tanker ships delivering fuel to Islay.

Bunnahabhain Pedro Ximenez Finish, Feis Ile 2006, Islay Festival

Description

One of 761 bottles for Feis Ile 2006; Islay Festival of Malt and Music. The bottle is signed and dated by distillery staff. Usually only available to distillery visitors.

 

Distillery: Bunnahabhain

Founded 1881. Tucked away at the end of the single track road on the north east of Islay. A hint of salt, a touch of caramel, sherry and malt, soft and gentle. And cottages to rent, idyllic too!

 

Tasting Notes

Beautifully sweet with the Pedro Ximenez notes lifting the chocolate-coated toffee richness to an aroma crescendo. A palate of cappuccino with whipped cream and dusted dark chocolate tiptoes towards a spiced dessert-fruit mixture of subtly smoked cashew nuts lightly sprinkled with sea-salt.

Description

One of only 2,000 bottles available exclusively to visitors at the distillery shop. Bottled 2007 and available from the Islay Festival 2007. American and European oak casked (ex-bourbon and ex-sherry).

In Islay terms this whisky is gentle, notwithstanding, there is malt and reek and salt and sweetness so sublimely and completely interwoven to the whisky.

Description

One of just 110 individually numbered bottles from a single cask. Available exclusively at the distillery during the 2007 Islay Festival. This, the 1st ever 70cl release from Islay's newest distillery. The whisky is a Bowmore finished in a rum cask at Kilchoman distillery.

 

Distillery: Kilchoman

The most westerly of Islay’s distilleries and this the newest, having been built at Rockside Farm, and opened in 2005. Own farm grown barley is used in its own maltings with Islay peat in its own kiln fire.

Laphroaig Cairdeas, Islay Festival 2008, Feis Ile

Description

A special limited edition release for the 2008 Islay Festival and distillery friends. Cairdeas, pronounced 'car-chase' meaning friendship in Gaelic.

Created by blending various vintage guises of Quarter Cask spirit ranging from 9-4 years old, and then re-racked in 1st fill ex-bourbon casks for an additional four years. These casks were then blended with two 17 year old 2nd fill sherry butts. The result is a distinct, crisp, spicy, peaty and very smoky dram that ligers in the mouth. Excellent.

Port Charlotte Valinch, First Cut, 2007 Islay Festival

Description

In homage to the exceptional single malt produced in the Islay village of Port Charlotte until 1929. The vision of master distiller Jim McEwan – was distilled in 2001.

Single cask number 007. Bourbon cask. One of 950 individually numbered bottles released exclusively at the 2007 Feis Ile (Islay Festival of Malt & Music).

 

Distillery: Port Charlotte

Port Charlotte is the name of the first new spirit produced by Bruichladdich distillery following the historic re-opening in 2001. In March 2007 Bruichladdich announced plans to reopen the Port Charlotte distillery on the site of the Lochindaal Distillery which closed in 1929.

Port Ellen Feis Ile 2008, Islay Festival, 1981 Vintage

Description

Single cask (number 1301) vintage Port Ellen for the 2008 Islay Festival and yielded approximately 220 bottles, each is individually numbered. The first ever single cask distillery bottling from Port Ellen.

Already a legend, the bottle was available at Caol Ila Distillery and promptly sold out within hours on the day of release; some keen collectors even pitched up the night before.

Which is almost as extraordinary as the price it changes hands for now.

Distillery: Port Ellen

Founded in 1825; closed in 1983. CLOSED, just the thought of it brings the tears to every eye, of every whisky connoisseur, everywhere. Twenty five years passed since the last distillation, long maturation, dwindling stocks, awesome whisky.
