It seems a new Ardbeg expression is ready to be launched: Ardbeg Alligator (according to Angus who used to work there if I’m not mistaken).Alligator is the name of the deepest way of charring / toasting casks. It refers to the resulting scale-like pattern of burnt wood, similar to a croc’s skin. Almost all bourbon makers use this type of charring, but for Scotch distilleries it’s less common.
Ardbeg did some experiments with heavily charred new oak casks and released two of those casks for Feis Ile 2009: Ardbeg 1998 cask 1189 and Ardbeg 1998 cask 1190.
I liked those casks A LOT (although most other people didn’t seem to care much) so I’m really looking forward to the release.

It seems that there is to be a new Ardbeg this year, something called ‘Alligator’.
From the name I suspect it will be Ardbeg that is either matured or finished in (hopefully the former) charred American oak casks. When a cask is charred heavily on the inside it is often referred to as an ‘Alligator’ due to the appearance of the staves after such a furious burning. I remember there were a couple of casks of 1998 Ardbeg that were at the distillery when I was there that were both heavily charred hogsheads. We used to sample them often because they were a pretty fascinating slant on standard Ardbeg, almost akin to a heavily peated bourbon. These casks ended up being bottled as a pair for the Islay Festival a couple of years ago and were sold for something ridiculous like sixteen thousand Guineas a piece or something like that. Anyway while we wait with slavering, baited and somewhat pointless breath for this new ‘Beg to arrive (its due for committee in March and civilians in June) lets have a few more natural Ardbegs to pass the time

個人是個標準的Ardbeg迷，從早期的Provenance，Lord of Isles，1977，17年開始收集到後期的MOR，TEN，Uigeadail，1990 Airigh Nam Beist，Supernova，Blasda，成長系列（Very Young，Still Young，Almost There，Renaissance)，Corryvreckan，Rollercoaster，除了MOR，Very Young捨不得開之外，其餘都喝過，基本上Ardbeg的基調是很明顯，我的總結是海水，泥煤還有青蘋果香。連Blasda只有8ppm的泥煤含量它的口感和香氣都跟TEN（泥煤含量24ppm）非常接近

大大說的沒錯 當初這兩桶就是實驗性質的 那時候是唯二的兩桶 當初我就拿了四組進來
只不過感興趣的是 這鱷魚 所調到的桶子 是哪時候的 是幾年的?

Ardbeg Miniature Pack
I want to depart, briefly, from our usual tasting format. Last week I had the pleasure of sampling from Ardbeg’s miniature Blasda Pack: two five centiliter bottles, one containing Ardbeg 10, the other Ardbeg Blasda.
The Blasda is a highly unusual expression for Ardbeg (and quite pricey as it is only available as a limited bottling). It’s only 40% ABV, and it is chill-filtered. Most unusual of all, it is extremely lightly peated, clocking in at only 8 ppm (parts per milion of peat). Most Ardbegs are at least 24 ppm. Ardbeg usually prides itself on its peatiness, and it’s non-chill filtering, so Blasda is basically the exact opposite of everything Ardbeg stands for in terms of the distillation process.
