Laphroaig 30 yo (43%,
OB, US bottling, 75cl, +/-2002) 
I’ve always loved
the 30yo, a very complex whisky. This American version represents a good
opportunity to have a go at it again. Colour: dark gold. Nose: ah yes, it’s well
one of the stunning earlier batches of the 30! The complexity is simply amazing
while there’s also this feeling of fullness and balance… In that sense, it’s a
bit like a great old wine, it simply obvious. To cut a long story short, we have
the most admirable combination of mellow smoke, sea air, light camphor and some
kind of tropical fruit mix that’s anything but ‘show-off’ here. A supremely
elegant nose. Mouth: waahwaahwaah… Sure it’s no ‘bodybuilt’ modern malt but it’s
all absolutely delicious, with the just the right amount of everything that
makes a great old Laphroaig. Cough syrup, brine, kippers, smoked salmon,
straight smoke, many herbal teas, mint and ripe passion fruits and mangos. A
little cardamom too. Brilliant and the 43% are anything but a problem. Finish:
not the longest but otherwise it’s perfect, more medicinal (antiseptic) and
ashy/sooty. Comments: such a great dram, too bad there are so many fakes around.
So pure magic and certainly one of the best official Laphroaigs ever but buyers
beware! SGP:556 - 93 points.
